A NOTE FROM THE MAKER

"I thought it might be helpful to explain a little about the fabrics that your kit contains and how best to use them to make the most of the unique qualities of each piece of fabric.

I source vintage and reclaimed fabrics from across the world to use in the Wattle & Loop Kits from English country brocantes, French flea markets and American & Australian vintage collectors.

When searching for fabrics for the kits I make a point of trying to choose fabrics that may not be of much use to other sewers or crafters because of holes, stains, tears, old worn-out embroidery etc. I believe it is these ‘imperfections’ that add the magic, personality and story to each artwork that is made from these fabrics.

In my own work I always make a point of using these ‘features’ of the old fabrics to my advantage to help tell the story of the piece. I do not try to hide them.

Your kit will contain many fabrics that have already had a full life of their own with the marks, holes and traces of old embroidery to prove it!

As you incorporate these fabrics into your artwork, you will be giving them a whole new life as a thing of beauty, rather than a bit of fabric disregarded for its imperfections. This is what makes Wattle & Loop Kits absolutely unique and special.

Each Wattle & Loop Kit contains a similar, but different, selection of fabrics to every other kit. Once I have used up a piece of vintage fabric, that’s it, I cannot simply buy more of the same. But, by using these special, limited quantity fabrics, you can be sure that your kit is 100% unique; as far from ‘mass produced’ as they come!

What is also very important to me, is that by using these fabrics, instead of constantly buying brand new fabrics, we are reducing our footprint on the environment. We are making something stunning out of fabrics that may otherwise have ended up in landfill.

While you’re making your artwork you can also add your own ‘special touches’ if you like. Do you have any of your own special scraps of fabric that you could incorporate?

Perhaps you have a box of old lace doilies or grandma’s old lace hankies that instead of sitting in a cupboard, could be incorporated into your special textile artwork to be admired and enjoyed once again?

Take your time and enjoy the process of selecting your fabrics, cutting out your shapes and arranging them, and enjoy daydreaming about the life each fabric scrap may have had before it was put into your kit. This is what makes a Wattle&Loop Kit special. It is like no other in the world.

Happy making!
Kylie

No you do not need sewing experience. Beginners will be able to manage this kit with some patience and an interest in learning some new stitches and techniques. You can simply learn as you go.

Do I need anything else to make this kit?
Yes, but only a few... You will need your own sharp scissors, a glue stick (or fabric glue stick/basting glue) and an HB pencil (or a fabric marking pen preferably erasable with water or heat). (See image to the left.)

How long will it take to make?
Depending on your skill level it may take from 5 - 12 hours.

The kits contain a sewing needle and require scissors so we recommend ages 12+. They are suitable for beginner sewers/crafters!

ABOUT THE MAKER
Kylie Wright, Founder

I formally trained as a Graphic Design in Melbourne, Australia, and worked in the industry for more than a decade before starting my business, Wattle & Loop. As part of Wattle & Loop I now run textile collage & slow stitching workshops in Australia as well as making & selling original textile collage artworks.

Wattle & Loop began while at a sewing retreat with friends where I was gathering up all the tiny, (but lovely!), discarded scraps of fabrics. These ‘scraps’, along with old, but beautiful textile bits & pieces from both of my grandmothers' collections formed the first “Wattle & Loop” original collaged artworks.

While I do use small amounts of new fabrics where needed (like Liberty of London!!), the vast majority are vintage or reclaimed textiles that I have sourced from across the world for their beautiful, visually rich, old & worn qualities. It is these lovely qualities in the textiles that give my work the “perfectly imperfect” character that appeals to so many.

Each Wattle & Loop Slow-Stitching Kit combines a carefully curated selection of these beautiful textiles, along with some Liberty of London fabric, DMC cotton threads & an embroidery needle.

By combining the beautiful textile pieces with slow-stitching & appliqué you can make a truly beautiful textile collage of your own that is completely unique, as while they are similar, no two kits contain exactly the same pieces of fabric!
